retroELOnews / The Aragon ELO

  • Bob Seger & Navasota (2-3 mayo)
  • Captain Beefheart (8-9 mayo)
  • Les Variations & Muddy Waters (16-19 mayo)
  • The Flock (22-24 mayo)
  • Climax Blues Band (25 mayo)
  • ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA (24 mayo)

  1. Daybreaker
  2. Showdown
  3. Day Tripper (The Beatles)
  4. Ocean Breakup / King of the Universe
  5. Bluebird Is Dead
  6. Oh No Not Susan
  7. New World Rising / Ocean Breakup Reprise
  8. 10538 Overture
  9. Solo de violín
  10. Ma-Ma-Ma Belle
  11. In the Hall of the Mountain King
  12. Great Balls of Fire
  13. Roll Over Beethoven

ON THE THIRD DAY estaba empezando a abrirles las puertas del mercado estadounidense.

  • Jethro Tull
  • Traffic
  • Grateful Dead
  • Country Joe and the Fish
  • Captain Beefheart
  • Bob Seger

ELOSPAIN:
This newspaper clipping—most likely taken from a local newspaper—is both fascinating and historically significant, as it documents one of ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA's earliest performances in the United States, at a time when the band was still virtually unknown to the American public.
The advertisement promotes the schedule for the Aragon Ballroom in Dallas, Texas, one of the city's leading concert venues during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
The programme featured several prominent rock and blues artists of the era:
Bob Seger & Navasota (May 2–3)
Captain Beefheart (May 8–9)
Les Variations & Muddy Waters (May 16–19)
The Flock (May 22–24)
Climax Blues Band (May 25)
ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA (May 24)
This suggests that ELO shared the weekend billing with The Flock, who may have served as the opening act on the night of May 24, rather than performing a completely separate concert. Although this cannot be confirmed with certainty, it would be a perfectly logical explanation for the way the advertisement is laid out.
The performance formed part of ELO's On the Third Day North American tour, immediately following the May 23 concert in El Paso, Texas, and just before the Springtime Rock Jubilee festival in Tampa, Florida, on May 25.

The ELO Performance
According to the band's touring chronology, this concert took place during ELO's first North American tour, most likely in May 1974. The purpose of the tour was to introduce the band's unique musical concept to American audiences.
At that time, the line-up consisted of:
JEFF LYNNE
BEV BEVAN
RICHARD TANDY
MIKE de ALBUQUERQUE
MIK KAMINSKI
HUGH McDOWELL
MIKE EDWARDS
By then, the band had developed into a remarkably cohesive unit and was entering the transitional period that would eventually lead to ELDORADO.
Setlist.fm preserves the setlist performed in Dallas:
Daybreaker
Showdown
Day Tripper (The Beatles)
Ocean Breakup / King of the Universe
Bluebird Is Dead
Oh No Not Susan
New World Rising / Ocean Breakup Reprise
10538 Overture
Violin Solo
Ma-Ma-Ma Belle
In the Hall of the Mountain King
Great Balls of Fire
Roll Over Beethoven
This was one of the classic setlists of the 1974 tour.
For its time, the stage production was highly ambitious, featuring electric cellos, violins, an unusually sophisticated amplification system, and an impressive amount of technical equipment.
This advertisement is especially valuable because it predates ELO's enormous commercial breakthrough in the United States.
By the time the band performed in Dallas, "Showdown" had already begun attracting attention, while On the Third Day was starting to open the doors to the American market. ELDORADO, the album that would firmly establish the band's reputation, was still several months away from release.
Consequently, this advertisement belongs to a fascinating period when ELO was still performing in medium-sized venues, before becoming one of the biggest concert attractions in the United States.

The Aragon Ballroom
Although this advertisement refers to the Aragon Ballroom in Dallas, it is worth noting that the Aragon Ballroom name is more famously associated with the historic venue in Chicago, which opened in 1926 and became one of America's most celebrated concert halls. Throughout the 1970s, it hosted many legendary artists, including:
Jethro Tull
Traffic
Grateful Dead
Country Joe and the Fish
Captain Beefheart
Bob Seger
Concert advertisements from this period have become increasingly scarce, and original examples often command significant prices in memorabilia auctions.
This particular piece appears to be a newspaper advertisement, rather than a promotional poster intended for display in the streets. It was common practice for concert venues to publish monthly listings of upcoming performances in local newspapers.
For ELO collectors, however, this advertisement is especially significant because it documents one of the band's least-known periods—before international success, when they were still performing in medium-sized venues and JEFF LYNNE was refining the sound that, only a few years later, would transform ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA into one of the world's greatest rock bands.
