No sé explicarlo mejor.

¡O… quizá no!

MIS FELICITACIONES para OLD FUTURE CRASH.

ELOSPAIN:
“Any Resemblance to Reality” is Pure Coincidence
by JOSÉ REQUENA

I prefer listening to a song that brings references to a particular band (in our case ELO) rather than a cover of one of that same band’s songs.
The reason may be the difficulty involved in surpassing the original. Very few times — and I would even dare say I cannot remember any — have I been able to say that a cover sounds better than the original version itself. That does not mean there are not some that I find interesting or even enjoyable. Sometimes it has happened that I heard the cover before the original version, and in that case the opposite effect may occur, without taking away any merit from the true author. This is the reason why I equally respect and admire any cover or version.
As I said before, and as I have heard from those brave enough to attempt a cover (which already deserves merit), it is very difficult to perform one successfully and even more difficult to be accepted by those who listen to it and give their own personal judgment, momentarily becoming “music critics.” On the other hand, listening to a new song that evokes references or memories of a certain band can be not only interesting, but also attractive and easier to accept. It may even lead us to become followers of that new group and, eventually, devoted fans depending on their musical journey and how closely it matches our tastes.
Personally, new songs on an album give me far more than covers of original songs by any artist or band.
With the lack of new ELO material, fans of this band search for artists capable of supplying or contributing at least a small part of that musical style we have always admired. Any sound or reference to ELO/JEFF immediately captures our full attention, and although there have been occasions where someone came close to this way of making music, it has never been enough — nor continuous enough — to truly motivate the large community of JEFF LYNNE followers.
There have been musical projects such as LEO and bands like ALTERNATIVA with their album “A Night In Starlight,” who released works carrying a certain ELO/JEFF atmosphere and which were also discussed in fan forums around the world. However, the lack of continuity leaves us orphaned once again, and those records simply become another anecdote in fans’ collections, although in this case somewhat closer to official ELO material.
As soon as we hear about a work with ELO/JEFF-style musical connotations, we immediately focus all our attention on it. We search for rhythms or chords already pre-recorded in our memory and, if it passes the test, we quickly share it with our friends and acquaintances, following its development more thoroughly and exploring its artistic path both forwards and backwards in time.
Fortunately, here in Spain we have a band called OLD FUTURE CRASH which, from my point of view, are true followers and successors of ELO/JEFF, both in musical style and production. The project is made up of Pedro López and Nancy Betancourt.
In 2008 they released a vinyl EP (black and orange) under the “Turia Records Valencia” label featuring three extraordinary songs: “I’LL NEVER STOP,” “THIS IS HEAVEN,” and “SORRY.” It was sold in several countries and would later be accompanied by many more songs on what would soon become their debut album entitled “OUTSIDE TIME.” Fortunately, I had the immense privilege of listening to this album as each song was being born and developed, and ever since then I have remained amazed. Simply perfect and fully deserving of being heard by millions of ELO/JEFF fans around the world. They themselves will one day confirm what I am saying. I am completely convinced that it will attract attention.
With every song OFC added to this phenomenal work, it became more difficult to surpass the previous one, and yet no level ever proved too difficult to overcome. Only someone with the talent of these musicians could achieve that.
Songs such as “RISING,” “PEOPLE IN THE CITY,” and “CRYING LOVE,” among others (whose titles I would rather not continue revealing), make you ask certain questions that have also come to my mind at other times while listening to JEFF LYNNE songs:
Is it really possible to achieve happiness by listening to a song?
Does perfection have limits?
To the first question, I answer with a resounding YES. I am proof of it.
I hope JEFF’s new material takes me as far away as OFC’s “CRYING LOVE” does. The truth is that it reaches extraordinary heights. I have always thought and said that waiting is worthwhile, and the final result of this song is a clear example of that. It took time, but it was worth the wait. In fact, JEFF himself has mentioned this on occasion. An artist’s inspiration is not available at all times, and one must know how to take advantage of it when it appears.
To the second question, I must answer NO, although it surprises me to say it. It is not possible to improve a masterpiece like this, just as it is impossible to say that perfection has limits… this song proves it.
From its earliest conception, this song already painted itself in different colors. Very fresh. Groundbreaking. Special. Different. Unique.
To me, it literally breaks out of the album, carving its own groove beyond it. I do not know how to explain it any better. I still surprise myself listening to it and enjoying it as much as the first day every time I hear it. It strongly reminds me of the first time I listened to some of JEFF’s songs and the sensations they created. There is a whole world inside this track that transports you somewhere else while it lasts (which, by the way, feels very short — although it might be dangerous if it lasted longer, because I could lose myself inside it without finding a way out). It is addictive without being harmful, and one must know how to manage it because, at moments, it can make you forget that JEFF LYNNE may someday release a new album and that this OFC work will occupy a prominent place in many ELO fans’ collections. For me, it is the closest thing to the ELO/JEFF sound… almost touching it. I do not know what JEFF himself would think when hearing it, although I am sure he would be surprised because, without any doubt, we are facing A WORK OF ART in the form of a song.
“CRYING LOVE” is A BEAUTY. For me, unquestionably the best song on the album, although none of the others are lacking in quality. It will be an album full of highlights.
As far as composition is concerned, the summit has been reached. Or perhaps not! I thought the same thing with every new song… I never expected it to climb so high… because I feared it might fall… “it’s falling, it’s falling!”… “hold on!”… “come back down here right now!” Where does this composer find such inspiration? I cannot understand how someone can create something like this out of nothing. Incredible.
PEDRO’s voice on this track is sublime. Just like the song itself… UNIQUE! It is dangerous. As the album developed, his voice gained more richness and ease. It sounds effortless despite how difficult singing truly is. And regarding the production… what can I say? I do not understand how he does it, but he somehow makes it seem simple… He has talent overflowing and much to show anyone attempting to produce something in JEFF’s style.
As for NANCY, I can only thank her for painting lyrics onto such wonderful melodies. Not everything is music, just as not everything is night… there is also daylight, and this song feels like the morning.
“CRYING LOVE” reflects sunrise light, joy, happiness, optimism, and positive feelings… It is full of colors, leaning slightly toward oranges and Mediterranean light. It has the fresh aroma of newly cut grass and tastes like honey and peach. It is TREMENDOUS, POWERFUL, and COMPLETE.
It is capable of inspiring excitement and creating an easy smile without even trying. It has everything and nothing is unnecessary. IT IS PERFECT!
It has sound, melody, incredible rhythm changes, harmonies and… most importantly, something you notice immediately upon first listening: you can tell it was made with overwhelming enthusiasm and that they truly enjoyed creating it. I am a witness to that.
Followers of IDLE RACE will especially love and be surprised by it, while ELO fans will not miss anything they have always expected from a JEFF song.
MY CONGRATULATIONS to OLD FUTURE CRASH.
I believe it is impossible to repay the experience of hearing this song merely with congratulations, much less with simple compliments… they are insignificant. So, not knowing how else to do it, the only thing that comes to mind is paying the value of the album itself, already knowing that it will be enormously cheap for what it offers, especially considering it contains many other songs of this caliber — songs that will make it difficult for more than one listener to choose the best one.
THANK YOU FOR THIS GIFT AND FOR THE HAPPINESS IT BRINGS… In my particular case, it arrived at the perfect moment. YOU REALLY OUTDID YOURSELVES!
This is where one could say that “any resemblance to reality is pure coincidence,” or, if you prefer, that “not every comparison is necessarily unfair,” because let us admit it: faced with the continuous musical drought suffered by ELO/JEFF fans, anything that sounds like symphonic rock on the scale of ELO is always welcome. And this album will not contain covers or versions, but rather new musical creations with a very distinctive style, carrying the essence and inspiration provided by ELO’s music, for the delight of those who have had the fortune of listening to and collecting everything JEFF LYNNE has created throughout his extraordinary and extensive musical career.
Let those who have ears, listen…
