OUTSIDE TIME by OLD FUTURE CRASH
¿Suena a ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA?
    “THIS IS HEAVEN”

  9. Xavier Urbina dice:

I have been waiting quite some time for this album to come out – it finally arrived to Ecuador a couple of days ago. Now that I have thoroughly listened to it, I have decided to review it; in English – for the benefit of other fans around the world.

I knew Mauri was working on this album and I was expecting a somewhat amateurish album when he mentioned it to me many months ago in Facebook. Boy, was I wrong. The moment I listened to the single “Rising” I was blown away. I immediately knew this was something special, done by real pro musicians.

It is clear that OFC gets its inspiration from ELO / Jeff Lynne and, in my opinion, OFC are the best iteration of ELO I have listened to so far. I can honestly say I’m enjoying OFC more than most of the stuff done by other ELO inspired bands such as ELO Part II, The Orchestra, etc.

This is an excellent effort that deserves to have its own standing and place. The melodies are extremely well built and chord structures are a perfect fit – these guys have created some outstanding songs, full of what George Harrison used to call ‘naught chords’. Arrangements and production are extremely well executed – I really loved the string arrangements on every tune. You can also see that these guys had a lot of fun making this album in songs such as “I’m a Robot” or “Crying Love”; also evident is that main members of OFC are keyboardists, as their piano intros and arrangements are very piano oriented. It is a very creative album, no doubt.

You really have it all here. There are some great ballads (“Sorry”, which reminds me of Telephone Line) as well as bouncy more upbeat songs such as “Rising” and “I’ll Never Stop” (which are my personal favorites). There are also some great ‘ goofy’ songs like I’m Robot (which brings to mind ELO album “Time), where you can see the creativity that lies beneath OFC. There are really hardly any weak tunes in this album – I’m not too keen on “Sheila” or the album intro, but then again, it’s a matter of taste.

The only aspect that prevents me from giving this album a solid perfect 5 score is that the main vocals seem a little low. The main vocalist has a perfect voice for these types of songs, but has decided to mix himself down and I cannot make out many of the lyrics (I find myself singing the melodies to most songs, but cannot figure out the words so easily).

I have placed most of the songs in this album into my ‘favorites’ playlist. It is an excellent record and I hope Jeff Lynne himself can have a listen someday – he would be proud. In the meantime I have this record playing on my car stereo every day – all day.

Respecto a “I’m A Robot” me pareció haber oido por allí la frase “Darkness Fills The Misty Place”. Y por fin “I’ll Never Stop”, “Sorry” y “This Is Heaven” están en un álbum.

  13. Daniel Horacio Díaz Cifuentes dice:
