La bendita culpa la tuvo «Livin’ Thing»…
Para cualquier persona sería imposible expresar lo vivido en aquellos años, máxime si nos alejamos mucho más atrás. Por esto, voy a sobrevolar con mi nave ELO particular para recorrer ese espacio de tiempo en un breve repaso que no contendrá todo pero sí lo más significativo.
Antes de comenzar, reconozco a ciencia cierta que se quedará parte importante sin nombrar y que supondrá dejar vacíos de contenido, pero no podré evitarlo. Gran parte o lo más esencial lo intentaré dejar aquí escrito haciendo lo posible por no obviar aquello más importante y relevante de mi «POR QUÉ».
Corría el año 1975… Con 14 años deambulaba entre músicas de estilos diversos con mi radiocassette y cantidad de cintas que hoy serían una reliquia. Por entonces casi me hago fan de THE BEATLES (como tantos otros), pero un año después llegó a mis sentidos el sonido que me marcaría «de por vida» el ser, o no ser fan de una banda musical.
Llegó sin esperarlo, sin llamarlo, sin ir a buscarlo. De forma digamos casual y cuasi divina. Llegó y se quedó conmigo sin que yo lo evitara… y… sencillamente, lo viví y me transformó. Si hoy sigo siendo fan de ELO es por la bendita culpa de JEFF LYNNE, su «Livin’ Thing» y el mundo musical que creó desde esa imaginación suya de genio indiscutible.
Coincidente fue que, durante el verano de 1976, un amigo de fuera de mi ciudad y que venía de visita a las Fiestas Patronales de mi población me prestó, sin saber lo que hacía, el álbum «A New World Record» de una tal ELO, por unos días. La portada me resultó conocida nada más verla y poderosamente atractiva por haberla visto antes en manos de otros jóvenes de mi edad que compartían cervezas al aire libre en lugares de copas y ambientes musicales de mi ciudad. Sin saberlo yo, el tema que tantas sensaciones me proporcionaba y la portada de este disco guardaban una estrecha relación que desde entonces me resulta mágica. Lo verdaderamente ilusionante para mi fue escuchar este disco completamente y descubrir un «nuevo mundo» musicalmente hablando. No era solo «Livin’ Thing». Este tema era parte de «UN TODO» «ÚNICO» «IRREPETIBLE» «CONCEPTUAL», y sin el resto sólo era una porción de felicidad para mis sentidos. A partir de aquí ELO fue el objetivo a descubrir para mi.
Conforme descubría el pasado musical de esta banda: «ELDORADO» (mi preferido) y «Face The Music», mi propio mundo se transformaría. Fue un afán por llegar hasta el final que hoy por hoy no me sorprende, pero que entonces hubiese resultado preocupante si alguien se hubiese enterado de mi propósito y mi desmedido interés. Llegó «Out Of The Blue» rompiendo todos mis esquemas. A partir de ahí ya no se transformaría más mi aparente mundo musical… a partir de ahí cambiaría mi vida… ¡nunca imaginé hasta dónde, ni tampoco hasta cuándo!
Me consideraba fan de ELO de pleno derecho y, por ende, del creador y genio de este proyecto: JEFF LYNNE.
Con mucho esfuerzo por la dificultad de encontrarlos, conseguí los tres primeros álbumes de este genio y así me enteré de la existencia de Roy Wood… alguien que compartió la creatividad junto a JEFF en los dos primeros discos. Descubrí tiempo después The Move, Idle Race… sorprendiéndome sin parar de los pasos andados por JEFF antes de ELO y sus creaciones musicales. Mientras tanto nacían «Discovery», «Xanadu», «Time»… a un ritmo vertiginoso. Y, aunque nunca sonó ELO tan bien como hasta el momento en el que lo descubrí (desde mi punto de vista), sí consiguió ilusionarme en cada nueva entrega y vivir el momento único de pinchar cada uno de los vinilos por primera vez en mi giradiscos, y mientras lo escuchaba disfrutar del diseño de las portadas y su contenido, leyendo y releyendo los créditos y la letra de las canciones… hasta el más mínimo e ínfimo detalle. Me sorprende recordar la impaciencia que sentía siempre, al imaginar cómo sería y cómo sonaría el siguiente trabajo de ELO/JEFF cuando apenas tenía en las manos uno nuevo. Mi hambre no tenía límites entonces, y debo admitir que hoy tampoco. Me considero un «ogro golón» de este divino creador.
Llegaron «Secret Messages» y «Balance Of Power» dejando extraños sinsabores sin que éstos pudieran mermar lo ya realizado anteriormente por esta banda. En 1997, y con la llegada de internet tuve la suerte de poder inscribirme como fan de ELO en una web extranjera que cerró primero estas suscripciones y al año aproximadamente la página en su totalidad. Durante ese año recibí cartas de amigos de toda España que, al ver mis datos en dicha web, me pedían información para poder aparecer en la misma, tal y cual yo lo había hecho antes. Les respondí personalmente a cada uno de ellos, y me sorprendió que hubiese tantas personas en nuestro país con las mismas inquietudes que yo por la música de ELO. Desde ese mismo momento consideré que yo no era un «bicho tan raro» cuando tantos otros FANS llamaban a mi puerta. Eso y el cierre definitivo de esa web provocó que ELO ESPAÑA se convirtiese, primero en un proyecto y poco después en una realidad, donde, además de rendir tributo/homenaje a ELO/JEFF por todo lo que yo recibí de él, se crearía un listado de fans o seguidores de ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA que denominaría AMIGOS DE ELO ESPAÑA con los datos de aquellos que quisiesen aparecer en ella como tales. Cabe decir que este listado creció más rápidamente de lo esperado, consiguiendo tener amigos en prácticamente todas las provincias españolas en poco tiempo. Después llegaron desde otros países de habla hispana y del resto del mundo. Hoy continúa creciendo.
Siendo «Zoom» un buen trabajo que bien podría haber pasado como un disco solista de JEFF, sonó como un portazo a lo que fue hasta entonces ELO. La semilla seguía germinando en mi interior.
Es aquí donde he de dejar de hablar de forma personal o particular, para hablar en nombre de tod@s aquellos que formamos ELO ESPAÑA y que por su condición, son parte de esta gran familia cibernética de chiflados por la música de ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA y JEFF LYNNE. Una cosa llevó a otra y paulatinamente fuimos incrementando las secciones de nuestra web con contenidos cada vez más interesantes para nuestros visitantes: foro, encuestas, concursos, sorteo de entradas, libro de visitas, agenda calendario, tablón de anuncios, traducciones, podcast, tienda, crónicas de conciertos, anuarios y mucho mas.
Hoy ELO ESPAÑA sigue escribiendo su futuro. Lo que comenzó el 20 de mayo de 1999 con reducidos recursos fue cambiando y adaptándose a los tiempos sin perder aquellos motivos por lo que fue concebido y ampliándose en cuanto a contenido e información de actualidad, siempre referente a ELO/JEFF y relativos. Primero recurrimos a espacios gratuitos con publicidad que permitiera nuestra existencia, y más adelante compramos un dominio propio y hosting para albergar una web como merecía ELO. Realizamos reuniones virtuales vía chat y también de forma presencial permitiendo conocernos personalmente. Conseguimos entradas para varios conciertos de «The Orchestra» en nuestro país que sorteamos desde nuestra web, e incluso pases especiales para asisitir a los ensayos de esta banda, y hoy se nos reconoce desde diferentes medios de comunicación, e incluso miembros originales de la banda nos han escrito de forma personal. No tenemos metas y es por esto que seguimos existiendo y creciendo. En todos estos años que hemos cumplido, hemos pasado por mejores y no tan mejores momentos, pero todos han valido la pena vivirlos porque no ha habido «peores momentos» nunca, y porque de todos ellos hemos ganado lo que más vale en este mundo, que son «los amigos» conseguidos y a los cuales no nombro porque no podría mencionarlos a todos sin que alguien pudiese quedar sin aparecer no por omisión sino por olvido. Y todo gracias a la música de JEFF LYNNE.
De nuevo, y de forma personal, debo reconocer muchos agradecimientos a tanta gente que no sabría por donde comenzar… bueno, sí… a mi familia sobre todo, que han aguantado y lo siguen haciendo, a este chiflado y fanático que ocupa casi todo su tiempo libre en pensamientos mELOmanos, y que ha inculcado la música de JEFF hasta conseguir que su propia esposa e hijas reconozcan esta música al vuelo, apoyándome y animándome en cada una de las iniciativas que propongo sin fisuras.
A JEFF y a sus creaciones musicales, como responsable directo de todo lo vivido, y a cada uno de los amigos creados a consecuencia de la bendita existencia de este genio. Ellos saben quienes son… Al final lo que importa es que todo valió la pena y que «lo mejor todavía está por llegar».
ELO forma parte de mi como yo formo parte de este mundo al que también agradezco que haya hecho coincidir nuestra existencia para conocernos y rendir mi merecido homenaje a JEFF LYNNE a través de ELO ESPAÑA. Creo que nunca haré lo suficiente para pagar el gran legado y la felicidad que me ha aportado la música de éste genio musical, que ya considero parte de mi familia, que he conocido personalmente, me ha firmado varios discos y he tenido el honor de asistir a uno de sus conciertos en directo.

The blessed fault was "Livin' Thing"... For anyone, it would be impossible to express what was experienced in those years, especially if we go back even further. Therefore, I will navigate with my personal ELO ship to go through that time in a brief overview that will not contain everything but will include the most significant. Before starting, I acknowledge that a significant part will remain unmentioned and will leave gaps in content, but I cannot avoid it. I will try to leave here written down much of what is important and relevant to me, doing my best not to overlook the most important and relevant part of my "WHY". The year was 1975... At 14 years old, I wandered among various music styles with my portable cassette player and a bunch of tapes that would be relics today. At that time, I almost became a fan of THE BEATLES (like so many others), but a year later, the sound that would "mark me for life" as a fan of a musical band came into my senses. It arrived unexpectedly, without calling for it, without seeking it out. In a say, casual and quasi-divine manner. It arrived and stayed with me without me avoiding it... and... simply put, I lived it and it transformed me. If I'm still a fan of ELO today, it's because of the blessed fault of JEFF LYNNE, his "Livin' Thing," and the musical world he created from his undeniable genius imagination. It was a coincidence that during the summer of 1976, a friend from outside my city who came to visit for the Patron Saint Festivities of my town lent me, without knowing what he was doing, the album "A New World Record" by a certain ELO, for a few days. The cover seemed familiar to me as soon as I saw it, and it was powerfully attractive because I had seen it before in the hands of other young people my age who shared beers outdoors in bars and musical atmospheres of my city. Unbeknownst to me, the song that provided me with so many sensations and the cover of this album had a close relationship that has seemed magical to me ever since. What was truly exciting for me was to listen to this album in its entirety and discover a "new world" musically speaking. It wasn't just "Livin' Thing." This song was part of a "WHOLE" "UNIQUE" "UNREPEATABLE" "CONCEPTUAL" piece, and without the rest, it was just a portion of happiness for my senses. From then on, ELO was the goal for me to discover. As I discovered the musical past of this band: "ELDORADO" (my favorite) and "Face The Music," my own world would transform. It was an eagerness to reach the end that nowadays doesn't surprise me, but back then, it would have been worrying if someone had found out about my purpose and my excessive interest. "Out Of The Blue" arrived, breaking all my schemes. From then on, my apparent musical world would not transform anymore... from then on, my life would change... I never imagined how far, or for how long! I considered myself a full-fledged fan of ELO and, consequently, of the creator and genius behind this project: JEFF LYNNE. With much effort due to the difficulty of finding them, I obtained the first three albums of this genius and thus learned about the existence of Roy Wood... someone who shared creativity with JEFF on the first two albums. I discovered later The Move, Idle Race... constantly amazed by the steps taken by JEFF before ELO and his musical creations. Meanwhile, "Discovery," "Xanadu," "Time" were born... at a dizzying pace. And although ELO never sounded as good as it did until the moment I discovered it (from my point of view), it did manage to excite me with each new release and experience the unique moment of playing each of the vinyl records for the first time on my turntable, and while listening, enjoying the design of the covers and their contents, reading and rereading the credits and lyrics of the songs... down to the smallest detail. It surprises me to remember the impatience I always felt, imagining what the next ELO/JEFF work would be like and how it would sound when I barely had a new one in my hands. My hunger had no limits then, and I must admit that today it still doesn't. I consider myself a "greedy ogre" of this divine creator. "Secret Messages" and "Balance Of Power" arrived, leaving strange aftertastes that could not diminish what had already been achieved by this band. In 1997, with the arrival of the internet, I was lucky to be able to register as an ELO fan on a foreign website that first closed these subscriptions and approximately a year later the entire page. During that year, I received letters from friends from all over Spain who, upon seeing my data on that website, asked me for information to be able to appear on it, just as I had done before. I personally responded to each one of them, and I was surprised that there were so many people in our country with the same interests as me in the music of ELO. From that moment on, I considered that I was not such a "strange creature" when so many other FANS knocked on my door. That and the definitive closure of that website led ELO ESPAÑA to become, first as a project and shortly thereafter as a reality, where, in addition to paying tribute/homage to ELO/JEFF for everything I received from him, a list of fans or followers of ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA called FRIENDS OF ELO ESPAÑA would be created with the data of those who wanted to appear on it as such. It should be noted that this list grew faster than expected, managing to have friends in practically all the Spanish provinces in a short time. Then they came from other Spanish-speaking countries and from around the world. Today it continues to grow. While "Zoom" was a good work that could well have passed as a solo album by JEFF, it sounded like a slam on what ELO had been until then. The seed continued to germinate within me. This is where I have to stop speaking in a personal or particular way and speak on behalf of all those who make up ELO ESPAÑA and who, by their condition, are part of this great cybernetic family of music lovers of ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA and JEFF LYNNE. One thing led to another, and gradually we increased the sections of our website with increasingly interesting content for our visitors: forum, polls, contests, ticket giveaways, guestbook, agenda calendar, bulletin board, translations, podcasts, store, concert reviews, yearbooks, and much more. Today, ELO ESPAÑA continues to write its future. What started on May 20, 1999, with limited resources has changed and adapted to the times without losing the reasons for which it was conceived, and it has expanded in terms of content and up-to-date information, always related to ELO/JEFF and related topics. Initially, we relied on free spaces with advertising to allow our existence, and later we purchased our own domain and hosting to host a website that ELO deserved. We held virtual meetings via chat and also in person, allowing us to get to know each other personally. We managed to obtain tickets for several concerts of "The Orchestra" in our country, which we raffled off from our website, and even special passes to attend the band's rehearsals. Today, we are recognized by various media outlets, and even original members of the band have written to us personally. We have no specific goals, which is why we continue to exist and grow. In all these years that we have been in existence, we have gone through better and not-so-good moments, but they have all been worth living because there have never been "worse moments," and because from all of them we have gained the most valuable thing in this world, which is "friends" made, whom I do not mention because I could not mention them all without someone potentially being left out not due to omission but by forgetfulness. And all thanks to the music of JEFF LYNNE. Again, on a personal note, I must acknowledge many thanks to so many people that I wouldn't know where to begin... well, yes... especially to my family, who have endured and continue to do so, to this crazy and fanatic who spends almost all his free time in mELOmaniac thoughts, and who has instilled the music of JEFF until his own wife and daughters recognize this music immediately, supporting and encouraging me in every initiative I propose without fail. To JEFF and his musical creations, as the direct responsible for everything lived, and to each of the friends created as a result of the blessed existence of this genius. They know who they are... In the end, what matters is that everything was worth it and that "the best is yet to come." ELO is part of me as I am part of this world, for which I am also grateful for aligning our existence to meet and pay my deserved tribute to JEFF LYNNE through ELO ESPAÑA. I believe I will never do enough to repay the great legacy and happiness that the music of this musical genius has brought me, whom I already consider part of my family, whom I have met personally, who has signed several records for me, and whom I have had the honor of attending one of his live concerts.
