Les unió la música. Esa música que les hizo famosos y, esa misma música quizá fue la causante de su separación, e incluso, lo peor, su irreconciliación, aunque JEFF LYNNE y ROY WOOD han tenido algún que otro «affaire» durante los últimos años de sus vidas musicales, eso sí, sin guitarras de por medio.

Menos se entiende la animadversión de JEFF LYNNE y BEV BEVAN, aunque tuviesen sus diferencias años atrás, cuando el primero decidió abandonar el proyecto ELO y BEV formó junto a algunos de sus compañeros la «PART II». Desde ese momento sus diferencias fueron a más y ya fue imposible verles cerca el uno del otro, y por muchos años que pasaron desde entonces ya ninguno hizo por reunirse aunque sólo hubiese sido para compartir un vino y charlar de los buenos tiempos vividos. ¿El ego?…

Ni siquiera en situaciones difícilmente disculpables han coincidido. Algo similar le ocurrió a KELLY GROUCUTT, aunque no vamos a entrar en ese tema hoy. No sabemos el grado de enemistad que pudiesen tener LOUIS CLARK o MIK KAMINSKI con JEFF porque nunca, o al menos, poco han demostrado su posible enfado con él.

Lo cierto es que, los FANS de ELO/JEFF hubiésemos dado algo bueno por ver a JEFF y BEV juntos estrechando sus manos. Ni decir tiene si hubiesen subido a un mismo escenario junto a RICHARD TANDY… Desde su separación intuimos que eso sería imposible en el futuro.

Les unió la música y con ella, la amistad durante muchos años. Aunque no tantos en el caso de ROY WOOD. Es fácil intuir que ELDORADO o FACE THE MUSIC ya no hubiesen encajado en su estilo, sin siquiera imaginar las diferencias de ROY con un OUT OF THE BLUE o un A NEW WORLD RECORD, y ni que decir tienen los siguientes trabajos de un JEFF LYNNE en pleno desarrollo creativo… A años luz de su peculiar personalidad… No sería la primera vez que se ha dicho que su salida de ELO dio alas a un JEFF obstaculizado hasta entonces. Por suerte, sus diferencias las supieron gestionar. No tanto las que tuvo JEFF con el resto de amigos, exceptuando RICHARD TANDY.

Les unió la música, pero, ¿qué fue lo que les separó?… quizá la ambición… quizá el ego… Lo cierto es que perdieron algo más que todo eso. Al final perdieron la AMISTAD, que es algo con más valor que todo aquello que buscaban, y al llegar al término del camino no quedó más que uno solo frente a los recuerdos y posiblemente a la pregunta de, hasta dónde hubiésemos podido llegar si hubiésemos continuado juntos…

En ciertas ocasiones, «menos es más…», posiblemente… y eso me trae a la memoria algo en cierta manera similar ocurrido con tantos de los amigos que formábamos ELOSPcom años atrás, aunque muchos de ellos fueron coaccionados a prescindir de nuestra amistad, movidos sin aparente razón por la intersección de un par de personajes negativos y extremadamente nocivos, que algún día quizá traigamos a colación… o no.

En la imagen, JEFF LYNNE sostiene un instrumento conocido como «guitarra de caja» o «cigar box guitar» (guitarra de caja de puros), un tipo de guitarra artesanal construida a partir de una caja de madera rectangular, popular en el blues y las primeras etapas de ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA y THE MOVE.

Music brought them together. The very music that made them famous was perhaps also what caused their separation and, even worse, their irreconciliation — although JEFF LYNNE and ROY WOOD have had one or two “affaires” during the later years of their musical lives, albeit without guitars involved.
The animosity between JEFF LYNNE and BEV BEVAN is even harder to understand, even if they had their differences years ago, when Jeff decided to leave the ELO project and BEV formed “PART II” with some of their former bandmates. From that moment on, their differences only grew, and it became impossible to see them anywhere near each other. And despite all the years that passed, neither of them ever made an effort to meet — even if only to share a glass of wine and talk about the good old days. Ego, perhaps?…
Not even in situations where reconciliation seemed almost obligatory did they cross paths again. Something similar happened with KELLY GROUCUTT, though we won’t get into that today. We don’t know to what extent LOUIS CLARK or MIK KAMINSKI might have had disagreements with JEFF, because they never — or at least hardly ever — showed any sign of being upset with him.
What is certain is that ELO/JEFF fans would have given anything to see JEFF and BEV together shaking hands. Let alone imagining them on the same stage again with RICHARD TANDY… From the moment of their separation, we all sensed that such a reunion would be impossible in the future.
Music brought them together, and with it, friendship for many years — though not quite as many in the case of ROY WOOD. It’s easy to imagine that ELDORADO or FACE THE MUSIC would no longer have suited his style, not even considering the differences he would have had with OUT OF THE BLUE or A NEW WORLD RECORD — and needless to say, even less with the later works of a creatively blossoming JEFF LYNNE… Light-years away from Roy’s peculiar personality. It’s not the first time someone has said that his departure from ELO gave wings to a Jeff who had been held back until then. Fortunately, those differences were managed well enough. Not so the ones Jeff had with the rest of his friends — except RICHARD TANDY.
They were brought together by music, but what was it that drove them apart? … perhaps ambition… perhaps ego… The truth is that they lost something far greater than all of that. In the end, they lost friendship, which is worth far more than anything they were chasing, and when they reached the end of the road, there was nothing left but one of them standing alone with the memories, and possibly with the question of how far they might have gone had they stayed together…
At times, “less is more”… possibly… and this reminds me of something somewhat similar that happened with so many of the friends who once made up ELOSPcom years ago, although many of them were coerced into abandoning our friendship, driven for no apparent reason by the interference of a couple of negative and extremely harmful individuals—whom we may perhaps bring up someday… or perhaps not.
