ELOSPAIN:
This was a shared idea between GEORGE HARRISON and JEFF LYNNE during one of the sessions for the album CLOUD NINE in 1987, which was produced by Jeff. Or was it simply a coincidence?
In 1988, George needed to record a song for the B-side of a single. As he didn’t have a studio booked, he called his friend BOB DYLAN to ask if he could use his garage in Malibu. That day, JEFF LYNNE and ROY ORBISON were free and joined the session, along with TOM PETTY, who also happened to turn up. From that meeting came “HANDLE WITH CARE”, which was immediately considered a gem. The record company refused to “waste it” on a B-side, and George said: “Well then, let’s make a whole album.”
And so the group agreed to record a full album titled TRAVELING WILBURYS Vol. 1, released in October 1988. The rest is history… The largest, most spontaneous and accidental supergroup in rock history was born.
