“Un viaje al universo musical de Electric Light Orchestra”

Desde ELO ESPAÑA os invitamos a conocer a un grupo nacional tributo a ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA, formada por seis músicos sevillanos conocidos por el nombre de ELOSPHERA.

Ellos son:
Ignacio de Micheo – Voz y guitarra
Blanca Arbea – Viola
Jesús Herrera – Guitarra y voz
Toni Hernández – Teclados y voz
Manolo González – Piano y voz
Jesús Perea – Bajo y voz
Jorge Collado – Batería y voz

Después de escuchar alguno de sus covers de ELO/JEFF pensamos que merecián que les diésemos a conocer desde nuestra web y les invitamos a realizar una entrevista que os mostramos a continuación:

• ¿Cómo se os ocurrió la idea de crear un grupo tributo a Electric Light Orchestra?

[Nacho]: La pasión desde hace tiempo por esta magnífica banda nos reunió a Manu (piano y voz) y a mí para intentar hacer un tributo acústico a lo Bungalow Palace, con Jeff Lynne y Richard Tandy. Con el tiempo, surgió la inquietud de ir ampliando la formación, y es con la incorporación de Pedro, al bajo y tercera voz, cuando se define el carácter esencial de la banda. La llegada de Jorge (batería y cuarta voz) nos permitió ampliar el rango a nivel vocal y poder abordar con solvencia los temas rockeros o disco. El carácter puramente ELO vino unos meses después con la aportación de Toni de arreglos de cuerdas, sintes y vocoder. Faltaba aún cubrir el vacío de una guitarra eléctrica solista y entonces apareció Manolo, también con su voz, para cerrar la formación que somos actualmente.

• ¿Y el nombre ELOSPHERA?

[Toni]: Bueno, la temática espacial y atmosférica siempre han estado muy presentes en las letras y en las portadas de la ELO. Así que nos pareció interesante partir de esa idea y unirla con la otra acepción de la palabra atmósfera, en el sentido de “ambiente ELO”.

• ¿Qué canciones interpretáis en vuestros directos?

[Pedro]: Actualmente tenemos en el repertorio:

Evil Woman, Livin’ Thing, Mr. Blue Sky, Confusion, Last Train To London, Don’t Bring me Down, Telephone Line, Can’t Get it Out of My Head, Strange Magic, Showdown, Steppin’ out, Turn to Stone, Shine a Little Love, Sweet Talkin’ Woman, Xanadu, Do Ya, All Over the World y Tightrope.

Y estamos trabajando para incluir en breve Prologue + Twilight y I’m Alive.

• ¿Cómo hacéis para seleccionar las canciones de vuestro repertorio?

[Jorge]: Normalmente las elegimos entre todos, teniendo en cuenta el equilibrio entre temas famosos y otros menos conocidos, baladas y temas más rockeros, etc. pero siempre prevalece un criterio de calidad más que de popularidad.

• Vemos que os centráis sobre todo en la etapa de los 70 y principios de los 80 ¿es así?

[Manu]: Sí, fundamentalmente nos centramos en la que consideramos su etapa dorada, la década de los 70 hasta el “Time” (1981), aunque no descartamos a priori incluir temas de otros discos.

• ¿Y qué os parece el último disco de Jeff Lynne’s ELO?

[Manolo]: “From Out of Nowhere” es un disco excelente en todos los sentidos, muy en la línea de las composiciones actuales de Jeff Lynne, cuyo incio marcó el “Zoom”. Es sorprendente ver como la voz del genio mantiene ese mismo carácter aterciopelado de antaño. Destacar “Down Came the Rain”, “One More Time” y especialmente “Goin’ Out on Me”, con esa mezcla entre blues y los “do do wap” de los 50.

• ¿Y cómo hacéis para conseguir que los temas se parezcan a los originales?

 [Manu]: Bueno, cuando decidimos montar un nuevo tema, cada uno trabaja independientemente su instrumento. En el caso de los teclistas, por ejemplo, tenemos que ver cómo cubrimos todos los arreglos de piano, cuerdas, sintes, etc., y en muchos casos, programar presets específicos para conseguir el sonido adecuado en cada tema.

Y las voces merecen un capítulo aparte… Generalmente yo me encargo de escuchar y sacar todas las líneas de voces para que después Nacho las asigne según las distintas tesituras y la dificultad de lo que hace cada uno con su instrumento; ¡un auténtico puzzle!

• ¿Y dónde os pueden ver o escuchar los seguidores de elosp.com?

[Toni]: Tenemos una web en Bandcamp donde hemos publicado los tres temas de nuestra primera maqueta: Telephone Line, Livin’ Thing y Don’t Bring Me Down.

También tenemos un vídeo en Youtube que incluye varios fragmentos de las canciones que tocamos en nuestra última actuación.

Así como una página en Facebook para mantener un contacto más directo con nuestros seguidores.

• ¿Qué proyectos tenéis a la vista?

[Nacho]: A corto plazo, estamos enfocados en dos proyectos: el primero sería nuestra presentación oficial en Sevilla; en este momento estamos terminando de cerrar las condiciones para tocar en una sala de mayor aforo.

Y por otro lado, venimos trabajando también en la producción de un vídeo en directo y con público sobre el tema All Over the World.

A journey to Electric Light Orchestra’s musical universe

ELO Spain introduces a new ELO´s tribute band, known as ELOSPHERA and made up of 6 musicians from Sevilla (Spain)

After listening to their studio cover tracks and live media by ELO/JEFF, we think they deserved to be populated through our website, so that we asked them for an interview.

How do you come up with the idea to create an ELO´s tribute band?
[Nacho]: The devotion for ELO music got together Manu (keyboards & vocals) and me to try to
emulate the unplugged session of Jeff Lynne and Richard Tandy at Bungalow Palace.
Eventually, we felt that we needed more members to complete the band. That way Pedro came up on scene (3rd voice & bass) at that point and the essential band configuration was
completed. When Jorge joined us (4th voice and drums), we were able to incorporate more
songs to the setlist and play not only ballads but rock and disco-style ones. When we really
achieved the goal to play any ELO´s song was right after Toni came along mainly to perform
strings, synthesizers, and vocoder. We were missing a lead guitar to perform solos, then
Manolo arrived, also helping the band with more backing vocals to complete the project.

Why the name ELOSPHERA?
[Toni]: The outer space environment has ever been very present in ELO´s lyrics and albums
covers, that´s why we put everything together and came up to build a new word meaning the
“ELO atmosphere”, “sphere”…

What is the band´s setlist?
[Pedro]: In our live shows, we currently play:
Evil Woman, Livin’ Thing, Mr. Blue Sky, Confusion, Last Train To London, Don’t Bring me
Down, Telephone Line, Can’t Get it Out of My Head, Strange Magic, Showdown, Steppin’ out,
Turn to Stone, Shine a Little Love, Sweet Talkin’ Woman, Xanadu, Do Ya, All Over the World y
Tightrope. And now working on Prologue + Twilight y I’m Alive to be included.

What are the criteria to incorporate new songs?
[Jorge]: We usually choose the songs depending on members’ proposals. The goal is keeping
the balance between ELO´s hits and non-popular songs, ballads and rock songs, … In any
case, we like to play good songs rather than popular.

We noticed that you are mainly focused on the 70´s and early 80´s, aren´t you?
[Manu]: You´re right, we think that those are the golden years of ELO, from the first LP up to
“Time” (1981). However, we don´t disregard to include songs from later albums to the setlist.

What do you think about the last Jeff Lynne’s ELO album?
[Manolo]: “From Out of Nowhere” is an incredible album performed in the style of the nowadays compositions by Jeff Lynne, whose starting point was “Zoom”. Amazing is how Jeff Lynne’s voice still keeps the smooth and elegant manners of the old times. I would like to stress on “Down Came the Rain”, “One More Time”, and especially “Goin’ Out on
Me”, where he mixes blues and 50´s Do do wap styles in a very genius way.

Let us know how the process is to make an accurate copy of an ELO´s original songs
[Manu]: Whenever we pick up a new song, every member of the band works separately his own line. In the special case of the keyboards (my instrument), Toni and I have to be able to perform all different lines on the original song: piano, keyboards, strings, etc. We often have to program the keyboards to emulate the original sounds for every song we play.
Concerning the voice lines, I usually lead the process by breaking up all of them. Finally, Nacho sends the adequate line to each member bearing in mind the different registers and the difficulty of what each musician must play; a real puzzle!)

Tell us what you are currently working on
[Nacho]: In the short term, we are focused on two different targets: firstly, we want to make the official introduction of the band in Sevilla, our hometown. We are about to set up a date in the next weeks. On the other hand, we look forward to recording a live video-clip with audience of “All Over the World”.
