La opinión de Paul McCartney sobre ELO y Jeff Lynne
Los Beatles influyeron en casi todas las bandas de rock and roll que les siguieron, ya sea directa o indirectamente. El cantante, compositor y multiinstrumentista Paul McCartney fue una pieza clave del éxito de la banda y tuvo la oportunidad de formar parte de esa revolución musical, presenciando de cerca a las numerosas bandas increíbles que siguieron el mismo camino.
A lo largo de las décadas, ha hablado de muchos grupos de esa época. Uno de ellos fue Electric Light Orchestra, también conocida como ELO, liderada por Jeff Lynne.
¿Cuál es la opinión de Paul McCartney sobre ELO y Jeff Lynne?
Jeff Lynne es gracioso, tímido, muy inteligente, un gran músico y un completo imbécil. (…) En realidad, todos formaban parte de él (el sonido de ELO), desde la gente a la que admiraba. Así que cuando escuché ELO , era muy parecido a lo que hacíamos en ‘Sgt. Pepper’s’ (con violonchelos), muy parecido a lo que nos gustaba, una especie de cuerdas matemáticas. Así que creo que lo primero que pensé fue: «Oh, ya sé de dónde sacó eso». Pero luego no te puedes resistir y es simplemente buenísimo. Piensas: «¡Dios mío, es una canción buenísima, ojalá la hubiéramos hecho nosotros!».
Tienen cuerdas ELO, cantan genial, la guitarra es buena. O sea, me encantan los éxitos. ‘Mr. Blue Sky’ es una canción muy especial, probablemente la que todos elegirían. Así que es un poco aburrido elegirla, pero es genial. Simplemente funciona, y si estás en el coche y hace un buen día, funciona de verdad.
“(…) (Jeff) tiene una voz magnífica, una voz realmente hermosa. Como cantante, no es fácil hacer lo que él hace; tiene una voz muy clásica. Es una voz única, distintiva, no es la de nadie más, es Jeff Lynne. (…) Compositor, cantante, baterista, guitarrista, no se puede hacer todo, no está nada mal”, dijo Paul McCartney.
El Beatle también dijo que Lynne es muy modesto e inocente en ciertos aspectos, pero a la vez, es «increíblemente talentoso». Tuvieron la oportunidad de trabajar juntos en 1994 cuando los Beatles le pidieron a Lynne que les ayudara a grabar nuevas canciones basadas en una maqueta casera hecha por el difunto John Lennon en 1977. George Harrison, quien siempre fue cercano a Jeff Lynne y lo tuvo como productor en muchos de sus discos, sugirió su nombre. Paul recordó que el difunto músico dijo que sería peligroso entrar al estudio sin productor porque podría haber muchos egos «flotando por ahí».
El sencillo «Free as a Bird» fue el resultado de esas sesiones. El tema se incluyó en el álbum Anthology 1, publicado en 1995. El segundo tema de la maqueta, «Now and Then», se publicó finalmente en 2024, con las partes de guitarra que George Harrison había grabado por aquel entonces. Lynne fue acreditada como productora junto con McCartney y Giles Martin (hijo de George Martin).
La comparación entre The Beatles y ELO siempre fue frecuente, a pesar de que eran buenos amigos y admiraban la banda de Lynne. En una entrevista con la revista Q en 1997, le preguntaron si ELO era «simplemente The Beatles con más instrumentos». Respondió contando un chiste de Ringo sobre el grupo.

Jeff Lynne produjo uno de los álbumes de Paul
Unos años después de «Free as a Bird», en 1997, Lynne volvió a colaborar con McCartney en el álbum solista de los Beatles, Flaming Pie, que también contó con la participación del baterista Ringo Starr en algunos temas. Jeff también participó en el álbum, aportando armonías vocales, guitarra eléctrica, guitarra acústica, teclados, coros y clavicémbalo eléctrico. En el año 2000, Lynne coprodujo la versión de McCartney de «Maybe Baby» (originalmente de The Crickets), que formó parte de la banda sonora de la película británica del mismo nombre. McCartney también comentó en una ocasión que percibe la influencia de «A Day in Life» en el éxito de Electric Light Orchestra, «Mr. Blue Sky».
Electric Light Orchestra se formó en 1970 por Jeff Lynne, Roy Wood y Bev Bevan en Birmingham, Inglaterra. Lynne es el único miembro original que participó en todos los álbumes que la banda lanzó durante las últimas cinco décadas. En directo, es el guitarrista y vocalista de la banda, pero en el estudio también tocaba la batería, el bajo y los teclados. A lo largo de su carrera, ELO lanzó 15 álbumes de estudio y 7 discos en directo. Se estima que el grupo ha vendido más de 50 millones de discos en todo el mundo.
Como solista, Lynne lanzó dos álbumes: «Armchair Theatre» (1990) y «Long Wave» (2012). Además de The Beatles, George y Paul, también produjo a muchos otros artistas famosos a lo largo de los años. Algunos de ellos son Del Shannon, Dave Edmunds, Brian Wilson, Randy Newman, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh y Bryan Adams.

The Beatles influenced nearly all the Rock and Roll bands that came after them, either directly or indirectly. Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Paul McCartney was a crucial part of the band’s success and had the opportunity to be part of that revolution in music, witnessing up close the many amazing bands that followed the same path.
Over the decades, he has spoken about many groups from that era. One of them was Electric Light Orchestra, also known as ELO, led by Jeff Lynne.
What is Paul McCartney’s opinion on ELO and Jeff Lynne
“(Jeff Lynne is) funny, shy, ever so clever, great musician and a total twat. (…) Per say, everyone was part of it (ELO’s sound), from the people he admired. So when I heard ELO, it was very what we been doing on ‘Sgt. Pepper’s’ (using the cellos), very much what we been into, very sort of mathematical strings. So I think the first thing was: ‘Oh, I know where he got that from”. But then you can’t resist it and it’s just so good. You go ‘Oh God, it’s a bloody good song, I wish we’d done that one.”
“They got these ELO strings, they’re singing great, the guitar is good. I mean, I’m a sucker for the hits. ‘Mr. Blue Sky’ is a pretty special song, it’s probably the one that everyone would choose. So it’s a bit boring to choose it, but it’s great. I mean, it just works and if you’re in the car and it’s a nice day, it really works.”
“(…) (Jeff’s) got a great voice, he’s got a really beautiful voice. Being a singer, it’s not easy to do what he does, got a really classic voice. It’s an individual voice too, it’s distinctive, it’s nobody else, it’s Jeff Lynne. (…) Songwriter, singer, drummer, guitarist, you can’t do it all, he’s not bad at all,” Paul McCartney said.
The Beatle also said that Lynne is very modest and innocent in some ways, but at the same time, he is also “amazingly accomplished.” They had the chance to work together in 1994 when Lynne was approached by The Beatles to help record new songs based on a home demo made by the late John Lennon back in 1977. George Harrison, who was always close to Jeff Lynne and had him as a producer on many of his records, suggested his name. Paul recalled that the late musician said it would be dangerous to go in the studio without a producer because there could be a lot of egos “flying around”.
The single “Free as a Bird” was the result of those sessions. The track was featured on the album Anthology 1, released in 1995. The second track from the demo, “Now and Then,” was finally released in 2024, with the guitar parts that George Harrison had recorded back then. Lynne was credited as a producer alongside McCartney and Giles Martin (George Martin’s son).
The comparison between The Beatles and ELO was always common although they were good friends and admired Lynne’s band. In an interview with Q magazine in 1997, he was asked if ELO was “simply The Beatles with more instruments”. He answered telling a Ringo joke about the group.
“Well Ringo says, You know why ELO broke up? They ran out of Beatles riffs. One of Jeff’s great prides is that he met John once – obviously a huge fan of John’s. John said, I really like all that ELO stuff, man. That was the highspot of Jeff’s life! He was vindicated. John said it was alright! He’s a smashing guy. Beer and football,” Paul McCartney said.
Jeff Lynne produced one of Paul’s albums
A few years after “Free as a Bird”, in 1997, Lynne worked with McCartney again on the Beatle’s solo album Flaming Pie, which also featured drummer Ringo Starr on some tracks. Jeff also performed on the album, contributing harmony vocals, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, keyboards, backing vocals, and electric spinet harpsichord. In 2000, Lynne co-produced McCartney’s cover of “Maybe Baby” (originally by The Crickets), which was part of the soundtrack for the British film of the same name. McCartney also said once that he hears “A Day in Life” influence on the Electric Light Orchestra hit “Mr. Blue Sky”.
