MIKE EDWARDS se unió a ELO poco después de la formación inicial del grupo, cuando JEFF LYNNE y ROY WOOD empezaban a definir su mezcla de rock con instrumentos clásicos. Sustituyó a HUGH McDOWELL durante una temporada y formó parte de la alineación que consolidó el característico “sonido orquestal” de la banda.

Era conocido por su característica forma teatral y creativa de tocar el violonchelo (a veces usando un arco de naranja, o incluso con botellas y objetos poco convencionales). El 3 de septiembre de 2010, MIKE EDWARDS falleció en un extraño accidente rural cerca de Totnes (Devon), cuando un fardo de heno rodó cuesta abajo y golpeó su furgoneta. Tenía 62 años. La noticia conmocionó a los fans de ELO y a antiguos compañeros, que lo recordaron como un hombre amable, espiritual y profundamente creativo.

JEFF LYNNE y varios miembros de ELO expresaron tristeza por su muerte, recordando su humor y su energía en los primeros años.
