Lo que mostramos desde ELO ESPAÑA a continuación es una curiosidad por si misma. Un pequeño tesoro que desconocíamos que existiese y que, una vez hemos descubierto, lo hemos traído a nuestra web con el único fin de darlo a conocer entre los FANS de ELO/JEFF, porque cabe la posibilidad de que no todos tuviesen constancia de su existencia.

Se trata de un artículo, que en los años ’80 se vendía normalmente en tiendas de discos, kioscos y tiendas de golosinas y del cual se lanzaron 9 series, con un total de 85 réplicas en miniatura de carátulas de álbumes musicales de la época, de un tamaño de 76×76 m/m. en cuyo interior se hallaba un disco de CHICLE con su agujero central y sus surcos dibujados. El envoltorio incluía a su vez la letra de la canción (generalmente la de mayor éxito) de dicho álbum, así como en algunos casos fotografías del artista. En la parte posterior de cada paquete se presentaba el logotipo de Chu-Bops con el número de la tarjeta correspondiente. También añadía los ingredientes y otra información en la parte trasera, aunque no se mencionan fechas ni derechos de autor. La serie se emitió entre los años 1981 y 1983 y contó con una gran variedad de artistas.

Al retirar la envoltura de celofán, el paquete se desplegaba para revelar una oferta de una carpeta plegable con la portada del álbum y la letra de la canción destacada. Como ya se mencionó, dentro del álbum había un disco de goma redondo de CHICLE. Desafortunadamente, en la actualidad, pocos han podido resistir el paso del tiempo, endureciéndose y resquebrajándose a causa de ello.

Otras solapas incluían formularios de pedido para unirse al club de fans del artista, y algunas de las series posteriores incluían un cupón de un dólar para el LP de varios artistas de CBS, «In Harmony». Algunas de las series posteriores también reemplazaban la letra con la biografía del artista (como es el caso de ELO). Los miniálbumes venían envueltos en plástico retráctil. Con cuidado, se podía extraer la goma rosa con forma de disco haciendo una ranura en el lateral del plástico, lo que dejaba el plástico intacto, igual que los discos originales.

Una auténtica novedad genial en su época. Las ediciones especiales incluían recopilaciones de varios álbumes, por ejemplo de Elvis (6ª temporada), The Beatles (8ª temporada) y The Rolling Stones (9ª temporada). La mayoría de las series contenían ocho álbumes. The Beatles fue la serie más extensa, con 16 títulos. Listado completo.

Se podían comprar artículos relacionados a través de una oferta por correo: Las primeras colecciones se lanzaron en EE.UU. en 1979/1980 y se vendían originalmente a 0,29 $ cada una. Las colecciones posteriores, centradas específicamente en Elvis, The Beatles y The Rolling Stones, se vendían a 0,33 $ cada una. Los álbumes coleccionables para guardar los minidiscos (originalmente a $2 cada uno), camisetas a $6 cada una, e incluso “una radio AM bellamente detallada y hábilmente decorada, escalada exactamente al tamaño del miniálbum de Chu-Bops” a $22.

Por supuesto uno de esos álbumes era de ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA, concretamente del TIME, con el número 58 y correspondiente a la 7ª serie, la que a continuación os mostramos en detalle.

ELO TIME LP CHU-BOPS SERIE MINI-LP ¡COMPLETO Y SELLADO! Este miniálbum Chu-Bops forma parte de la colección de miniálbumes Chu-Bops. Este es el número 58 (el último de la serie). Es la versión mini-bubblegum del «TIME» LP. Este CHU-BOPS está en perfecto estado original, sin abrir. El LP ELO es uno de los más difíciles de encontrar y casi imposible de encontrar precintado. Normalmente solo se ve en una colección completa de los 58. Mide aproximadamente 7,6 cm x 7,6 cm.

La colección de álbumes en miniatura Chu-Bops se mostraba en expositores con discos de chicle. Los Chu-Bops eran paquetes de chicle rosa con forma de disco, presentados en una pequeña réplica de la portada de 7,6 x 7,6 cm. Los Chu-Bops fueron lanzados en la década de 1980 por Amural Products Company. Presentaban a artistas de todo tipo, los cuales se abrían y se masticaba el chicle. Otros coleccionistas los conservaban sellados y se convertían en objetos de colección. The Beatles fueron de los más populares. Son muy codiciados, coleccionables y perfectos para exhibir.

En general, estos artículos de colección siguen siendo bastante asequibles, y su precio depende del artista de la portada y su rareza. Hoy, la venta más alta completada en eBay por un Chu-Bop es de $100 por un KISS 
Dynasty , y la más baja es de $2.50 por un Gary Numan Telekon. Se pueden comprar en lotes y el precio por unidad puede bajar hasta los 29 centavos originales. Si se compran abiertos y sin el chicle crujiente son aún más baratos.

What we present here today from ELO ESPAÑA is a curiosity in itself. A little treasure we didn’t know existed and, once discovered, we’ve brought it to our website with the sole purpose of sharing it with ELO/JEFF FANS, since there’s a chance not everyone was aware of its existence.
It’s an item that, back in the 1980s, was commonly sold in record stores, kiosks, and candy shops. A total of 9 series were released, comprising 85 miniature replicas of album covers of the time, each measuring 76x76 mm. Inside was a bubblegum disc, complete with a central hole and etched grooves. The wrapper also included the lyrics of the featured song (generally the hit single from that album) and in some cases photos of the artist. On the back of each package appeared the Chu-Bops logo with the corresponding card number, plus ingredients and other info, although no dates or copyrights were mentioned. The series ran between 1981 and 1983 and featured a wide variety of artists.
Once the cellophane wrapper was removed, the package unfolded to reveal an insert: a fold-out sleeve with the album cover and the printed lyrics of the highlighted song. As mentioned, inside was a round bubblegum disc. Unfortunately, most of these did not withstand the test of time, hardening and crumbling over the years.
Other flaps included order forms to join the artist’s fan club, and some later series included a $1 coupon for the CBS various artists LP In Harmony. In some cases, lyrics were replaced by artist biographies (such as with ELO). The mini albums were shrink-wrapped. With care, the pink gum disc could be slid out by cutting a slit in the side of the wrapper, leaving the plastic intact, just like with a real record.
A truly brilliant novelty for its time. Special editions included compilations dedicated to Elvis (6th season), The Beatles (8th season), and The Rolling Stones (9th season). Most series contained eight albums. The Beatles set was the largest, with 16 titles in total (full checklist available).
Related items could also be ordered by mail. The first collections were released in the U.S. in 1979/1980 and originally sold for $0.29 each. Later sets, focused on Elvis, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones, were sold at $0.33 each. Collectible binders to store the mini-LPs sold for $2, T-shirts for $6, and even “a beautifully detailed AM radio, skillfully decorated and scaled exactly to the size of a Chu-Bops mini album” for $22.
Of course, one of those albums was by ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA — specifically TIME — number 58 and part of the 7th series, which we now present here in detail.
ELO TIME LP CHU-BOPS SERIES MINI-LP – COMPLETE & SEALED!
This Chu-Bops mini-album is part of the Chu-Bops mini-LP collection. It is number 58 (the very last one in the series). It’s the mini-bubblegum version of the TIME LP. This CHU-BOPS is in perfect original condition, unopened. The ELO LP is one of the hardest to find and nearly impossible to come across still sealed. It usually only appears as part of a full collection of all 58. Size: approx. 7.6 cm x 7.6 cm.
The Chu-Bops miniature album collection was displayed in counters as bubblegum records. Chu-Bops were pink gum discs packaged inside tiny 3” x 3” replicas of album covers. They were launched in the 1980s by Amural Products Company and featured a wide variety of artists. People would unwrap them, chew the gum, or — as many collectors did — keep them sealed, turning them into valuable collectibles. The Beatles sets were especially popular. Today, they are highly coveted, collectible, and perfect for display.
In general, these collectibles remain fairly affordable, with prices depending on the artist and rarity. Today, the highest completed eBay sale for a Chu-Bop is $100 (for KISS Dynasty), while the lowest is $2.50 (for Gary Numan Telekon). They can be purchased in lots, and unit prices can drop close to the original $0.29. If opened and without the hardened gum, they are usually cheaper.
International branding:
They were called CHU-BOPS in the United States, Canada, and Australia; HIT-POPS in the UK and Japan; and CHU-POPS in Germany, France, and Scandinavian countries. In any language, this stimulating new idea offered miniature album cover designs of top international recording stars. Your collection would grow in both size and value while bringing you in miniature many of your favorite albums. This International Collector’s Album provided an ideal case for storing and displaying them. Keep an eye on new releases at your favorite store, and continue collecting CHU-BOPS, HIT-POPS, and CHU-POPS — the official miniature album covers with bubblegum “records” inside.
