From Japan: To all ours fans in… Spain!

Jet Records/United Artist GXG 25/26 (1977) Manufactured by King Record Co. Ltd. Japan

CARA 1:
1. Turn To Stone.
2. It´s Over.
4. Across The Border.

CARA 2:
1. Night In The City.
4. Believe Me Now.
5. Steppin´ Out.

1. Standing´ In The Rain.
3. Summer And Lightning.

CARA 4:
1. Sweet Is The Night.
2. The Whale.

Yo espero que todos disfruteis escuchando “Out Of The Blue” tanto como nosotros hemos disfrutado haciéndolo.

Gracias.
Adiós!
Bev Bevan

ELOSPAIN:
For all our fans in Japan, this is how the heading of the letter from the band's main spokesperson, Bev Bevan, addressing Japanese fans in the Japanese edition of the double LP "Out Of The Blue" begins. I believe Bevan himself would agree to extend this greeting to Spanish-speaking fans and dedicate the letter to them as well, which we reproduce here, and which we would have liked to appear in the Spanish edition.
To make up for this "oversight," here is its "reissue" for all our fans in Spain.
For all our fans in Japan.
First of all, I want to say I hope you enjoy this album a lot. This is our 8th LP, and it's the first time we've recorded a double album. Like Face The Music and A New World Record, this was recorded at Musicland Studios in Munich, Germany. The 17 songs contained here took about 2 weeks to learn (in Switzerland) and approximately 14 weeks to record.
Now, here's a brief overview and my personal thoughts on each one:

SIDE 1:

  1. Turn To Stone. The first single released from the album. A high-tempo number with a great rhythmic feel. Pay attention to the operator-style vocals in the middle.
  2. It’s Over. A lot of emphasis on vocals with Jeff and Kelly singing all the harmonies.
  3. Sweet Talkin’ Woman. Originally called «Dead End Street,» but we changed it when Jeff rewrote the lyrics.
  4. Across The Border. Listen carefully to the train noises and some Spanish-style trumpets. Great ending with a lot of phasing effect on the drums.

SIDE 2:

  1. Night In The City. Lots of traffic noise, which people living in Tokyo will be familiar with. A tough rock song that we usually choose to start on stage.
  2. Starlight. Delicate feeling for this song, attempting to create a «Rhythm and Blues» atmosphere in it.
  3. Jungle. Great fun recording this song, with our imitations of bird calls, elephants, Tarzan, and even a tap dance sequence performed by Jeff, Kelly, and myself.
  4. Believe Me Now. A very short song highlighting the Vocoder, an electronic device that can make almost anything sound like it’s talking.
  5. Steppin’ Out. A beautiful but somewhat sad song about having to move to another place (as we do all the time!).

SIDE 3:
This whole side of the album is a concept based on the elements of time, especially rain, and how weather conditions can affect your personality. The complete side is titled «Concerto For a Rainy Day.»

  1. Standin’ In The Rain. Really complicated and complex in some parts, probably the hardest song for us to learn.
  2. Big Wheels. So far, my favorite song on the LP. Very sad and classic, no matter what happens, the world will keep turning, and life goes on.
  3. Summer And Lightning. Great thunder and lightning sounds, recorded outside the studio in Munich, where it was raining heavily while we were there.
  4. Mr. Blue Sky. A happy song. We all feel happy when the sun shines after a storm. The chorus is very good at the end of this song, singing in the style of «Swingle Singers.»

SIDE 4:

  1. Sweet Is The Night. Very exquisite, sung again by Jeff and Kelly. They sing very well together and have similar voices. (Throughout the album, Jeff sings most of the songs, and Kelly adds her harmony part to all. I am the only other member of the group who sings on the LP, adding low and baritone parts when required.)
  2. The Whale. The only instrumental song on the album, written about the whale. A very beautiful and highly intelligent creature that is often unnecessarily sacrificed.
  3. Birmingham Blues. Most of us come from Birmingham, England, and this rock’n’roll song simply talks about how we miss it when we’re away.
  4. Wild West Hero. A dreamer’s song. It talks about a man who wishes to have a more exciting life. He would want to be a «Wild West Hero.»
You have here a very short summary of the songs on the "Out Of The Blue" LP. We are very proud of the album. I believe Jeff has written some of his best songs here, and his production is the best of all our albums.
We look forward to seeing you when we are touring Japan. I hope you all enjoy listening to "Out Of The Blue" as much as we enjoyed making it.
Thank you.
Goodbye!
Bev Bevan
