“The Big O”. In memóriam…

This is love”, compusieron “Handle with care”.

The end of the line”.

Roy Kelton Orbison… “The Big O”. Otis Wilbury… Jeff Lynne!!

ELOSPAIN:
On St. George's Day and Book Day, we should celebrate his birth, but the prodigious voice fell silent forever, prematurely, more than 30 years ago.
In late '88, Lefty W., one of the fictitious sons of Charles Truscott Wilbur, was recording two songs simultaneously: “Handle with Care” & “You Got It.” He was accompanied by his little brother Otis W., also known as Jeff Lynne, shaping these hits. Otis was also busy working on the personal projects of his friends Harrison & Petty.
Roy Orbison… Lefty W. started singing country and rockabilly until he discovered the roots of Rock & Roll, where he encountered figures like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry L. Lewis, and Carl Perkins, among others. Roy even had opening acts that went by the name of "The Beatles" in '63, Beach Boys in '64, and the Rolling Stones in '65.
Later, life dealt him a blow, losing his wife in a tragic motorcycle accident and, two years later, losing two of his three sons in a fire at his home while he was on tour. For two decades, he remained in a kind of musical "semi-limbo," although he rebuilt his personal life and continued to sing and compose.
But Roy Orbison was a survivor, a passionate musician who awaited his rebirth. Only Jeff knows if it was the difficult life of his friend that inspired the composition of "The Sun Will Shine on You" from his last album. Perhaps that's why Roy always wore sunglasses, a style that Jeff Lynne adopted later; although Roy explained that he forgot his prescription glasses on a plane and was forced to go on stage with sunglasses and never took them off again.
In April '88, the Nelson brothers & Otis, accompanied by Lefty, were having dinner together when "Cloud Nine" & "Mystery Girl" were… getting finalized. Trying to find the B-side for "This Is Love," they composed "Handle with Care." But the song was so magnificent that it would have been unforgivable to relegate it that way. Thus, the idea of recording a full album was born, and reinforcements were added: two more brothers, Charlie W. (Petty) & Lucky W. (Dylan). With a brief gestation of 10 days, Volume 1 of the TW. was born, and with this work, a legendary group.
Nelson W., the modest Beatle who had suffered from the odious rivalries between Paul & John, emerged as the captain of that unexpected formation of stars that shone in unison but without egos, under the anonymous pseudonym Wilbury.
Jeff Lynne (Otis W.) was the… unifying element, as later acknowledged by Harrison, for that shining constellation to be possible and thus find its place in the musical firmament.
It was the absence of rivalries and demands that created the favorable climate for the formation of an irreplaceable team, propelling the personal careers of the 5 "Wilbury" brothers.
Roy Orbison was excited; that musician dressed in strict black and with a melancholic retro appearance that Jeff admired from the age of 13. Life had been ruthless to him in the past, but he had taken the reins again and hopefully thought that the sun could shine again… on his musical career.
The song "You Got It," composed by the little brothers Otis & Charlie, was ready and started to be promoted. The Wilbury family in its entirety was experiencing a sweet moment, especially Lefty, who felt rejuvenated as a notable musician every day. But his heart couldn't keep up with the dizzying rhythm of these rekindled remote emotions and exhausting work commitments… and stopped beating at the age of 52.
Lefty Wilbury, the velvety voice, departed in search of his… bluer California… leaving an unfinished mega-project that the 5 brothers had begun to dream of. They could only pay homage to him with his guitar leaning on a rocking chair that followed the rhythm of the "The End of the Line" music video. That line that 3 brothers have already crossed…
Roy Kelton Orbison would have turned 83… "The Big O." For us, forever… Lefty Wilbury; The wonderful voice that seduced and inspired the budding vocation and talent of his little brother… turned into a great artist today… Otis Wilbury… Jeff Lynne!!
