GLive – Guildford Borough

6 Great Balls Of Fire
7 In Old England Town (Boogie No.2)

ELOSPAIN:
Already on the ELO SECRET MESSAGES website we were informed some time ago of the lamentable state, deterioration and complete abandonment of the Guildford Civic Hall.
Of the first shy live performances of the group already established as THE ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA, the one on May 7, 1972 at the mythical Guildford Civic Hall is remembered as the first known recorded record of the band.
The Civic Hall was built in 1962. It served Guildford well, drawing many of the city's contemporary bands during the 1960s and 1970s. Artists like Eric Clapton, Status Quo, The Stranglers and Paul Weller used the venue until it closed. But in the mid-'80s the Civic fell out of the youth music circuit, and by the '90s it became nothing more than a simple tribute band hangout. On Sunday, January 4, 2004, Gary Brooker & friends, gave what would be the last great concert on that stage, later the municipality was in charge of closing its doors.
Today we can say that the so-called GLive - Guildford Borough is practically remodeled and ready to open its doorsnext September, which will contain meeting rooms, a cafeteria and an auditorium with a capacity for some 1,700 people and in which first-class entertainment will be offered.

For those passionate about ELO, this is a great sound document. This album, now bootleg, before "pirates", is the first live recording of the group back in 1972 with songs from their first two albums, as well as a version by Jerry Lee Lewis and a song by Roy Wood that he edited for some time. then solo. The sound quality is more than acceptable, considering that it is not an official recording and also taking into account the year it was made.
In this concert we can take two things into account, the first is that JEFF LYNNE was always a sound perfectionist and, although he always preferred the studio to live, he liked everything to sound quality. Which can be appreciated even if the sound is not spectacular. The second is that Roy Wood, before leaving the group, was present in the preparation of songs for the second album "ELO 2".
This last will not mean anything to many, but it is that until relatively recently, there were always doubts and controversies as to whether Roy had left right after the debut album or not.
For those who only know the best-known songs, I warn you that here you will not find anything similar to the "Discovery", "Time" or "Secret Messages" albums. Here the sound is a Rock between progressive and experimental but of great quality. Cellos and violins with electric guitars and drums. Something that is not surprising now, but at that time not many groups had taken it that far, and even less live.
