Fred

ELOSPAIN:
At the "TIME" TOUR concert shows, an R2-D2 type robot was featured on stage as part of the show. The robot, though never explicitly given a name in the scenario, was affectionately referred to as "Fred" by the group. His movement was controlled by radio from behind the scenes. The show started with a big digital clock that could be seen until the start of the show. As the clock struck 0:00, the digital readout would change to form the word "ELO" and Fred the robot would jump onto the darkened stage and a tape of Time Prologue would play, as if Fred were speaking in his robot voice. Meanwhile, the band took the stage. Occasionally during the show Fred would roll around the stage and interact with the band or audience. During the end of Roll Over Beethoven, Fred would wave his arms, as if he were conducting an orchestra. At the end of the show, after Roll Over Beethoven, Fred would come out and a vocoder voiceit announced "Thank you and good evening from ELO". Unfortunately, as with the spaceship from the Out Of The Blue tour, Fred began to malfunction, and the show had to continue with an immobile or missing Fred. Fred even fell off the stage at the October 29 show in St. Louis, Missouri, apparently too damaged to continue that night. At a show in Europe, he received signals from an unknown source that led him to cross the stage and fall, breaking the Plexiglas dome. The group had paid £5,000 for the making of Fred. Since 2012, Fred has been in the possession of JEFF LYNNE himself, in his Los Angeles studio.
